What is psychotherapy, and how can it help?

The original meaning of the word ‘psychotherapy’ comes from Greek, meaning ‘healing of the soul’ [psyche (soul) and therapeia (healing)]. It further means with any type of psychotherapy, you can find healing at a deeper level.

It involves meetings between a therapist and a person seeking help where the latter’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours causing distress are discussed privately. Through this process, you can gain insight into your issue(s), find relief, develop coping strategies, and improve your emotional and mental wellbeing. As such, psychotherapy deals with deeper, more complex emotional and psychological issues compared with, for example, counselling. It further tends to explore the underlying causes of emotional distress, which might stem from past experiences or unresolved trauma.
